University College London
1970-76
Denys Lasdun
Camden
Grade II*
Two large projects designed by Denys Lasdun for the University of London in Bloomsbury from the late-1960s. The first part was the new library for the School of Oriental and African Studies, a seven-storey concrete structure with a strong horizontal emphasis, and a ziggurat-like plan. After that, Lasdun designed new buildings for the Institute of Education and Advanced Legal Studies along Bedford Way, an overwhelming monolithic concrete structure, whose horizontal stress is alleviated by the five square service towers that punctuate the range.
