National Theatre
Denys Lasdun & Partners
1961-76
Lambeth
Grade II*

Probably Denus Lasdun's most famous design, it has proved controversial with Prince Charles comparing it to a nuclear power station, but now seen as an intrinsic part of the South Bank. The building is designed with a square plan, in an almost ziggurat shape, with terraces running around the building above ground level. The strong horizontals of the exterior are balanced by the vertical fly towers which grow out of two of the theatres. The construction and finish are in uncompromising board marked concrete, both inside and out.
