HMV
1939
Joseph Emberton
City of Westminster

One of the most prominent modernist buildings on Oxford Street, the HMV store has had quite a chequered existence. Originally opened in 1936 to designs by Joseph Emberton, the store was badly damaged by a fire shortly after and rebuilt by the same architect in 1939. The later design was slightly different to the first with a similar black granite finish but without the gridded facade. When HMV went into administration in 2019 the store was left empty for a number of years before becoming a low-rent candy store. HMV reopened the shop in November 2023.
