The Economist Buildings
1959-64
Alison & Peter Smithson
City of Westminster
Grade II*
Designed by Alison and Peter Smithson, the Economist Buildings replaced an older set of structures with three towers of varying height on a raised plaza. They comprised a 15 storey office tower, an 8 storey block of flats and a smaller block originally occupied by a bank. The buildings are constructed around concrete frames with Portland sandstone facades and metal windows. The plaza featured work by Eduardo Paolozzi, and is itself formed of slabs of Portland stone. The scheme is now Grade II* listed and recently underwent refurbishment by DSDHA.
