Daily Express Building
1932
Owen Williams, with Ellis & Clarke.
City of London
Grade II *
Sleek former Daily Express offices on Fleet Street, designed by the engineer turned architect, Owen Williams. The project to design the building was initially given to the firm of Ellis and Clark, but their initial design was not flexible enough for fit in the new printing presses, so Williams produced a plan using a reinforced concrete frame that would allow more internal floorspace. He also changed the restrained art deco facade provided by Ellis and Clark for a dynamic glass and vitrolite exterior.
